04.02.12 ¦ April is Autism Awareness Month

Rise in autism rates demands effective treatment for all

Last week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced staggering new autism rates: 1 in 88 U.S. children are now diagnosed with the condition. In New Jersey, the incidence is even higher: 1 in 49 N.J. children are affected.

Given these skyrocketing rates, it is all the more essential that scientifically validated treatments are made available to the growing numbers of people who need them. Although there is no cure for autism, proven, effective treatments do exist, and must be accessible to all children and adults with autism spectrum disorders. These include intensive, highly individualized interventions based on the principles of applied behavior analysis (ABA). ABA-based interventions are extremely effective for treating the core symptoms and related challenges of autism. It is important to begin ABA treatment as early as possible, for the best possible outcomes.

At Bancroft, we have a long history of providing such highly effective services. As a nonprofit organization, we are dedicated to helping as many people as possible, through both direct service and our many free resources for families and disabilities professionals. 02.22.12 ¦ ‘Bancroft Unplugged’ events to feature personal stories by people with brain injuries

Bancroft Brain Injury Services will host three inspiring evenings of personal tales, triumphs, insights and special moments, at “Bancroft Unplugged: One world, many stories.”

The free events – scheduled for three sites in March, in celebration of Brain Injury Awareness Month – will feature brief autobiographical speeches by people with brain injuries.

“Brain injury has been in the news a lot lately, but most people still aren’t aware of the long-term challenges survivors face – as well as the great progress they can make,” says Cynthia Boyer, Ph.D., Bancroft’s senior clinical director of brain injury programs. “The three Bancroft Unplugged events are a rare opportunity to learn directly from those who are affected, and to be inspired by their courage and perseverance.”
